When vegetables pile up in my refrigerator, it sometimes feels like a CSA basket that needs to be dealt with before next week’s delivery arrives. It can be a result of impulse buying at the market or the bits and pieces left over from various recipe tests; usually it’s a bit of both. So last week I cleaned out the refrigerator. Some foods take more work to eat–and therefore burn more calories while you’re digesting them. Just the act of chewing foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean cuts of meat can increase your calorie burn by up to 30%! And then your stomach and intestines do their jobs. In a Japanese study, researchers found that women who ate the foods that required the most work had significantly slimmer waistlines than those who ate the softest, easiest-to-eat foods. Feel full on fewer calories? It might sound like another gimmick for weight loss, but it’s not. Rather, it’s putting the concept of energy density into practice to help with your weight loss. In fact well planned weight-loss diets  use the concept of energy density to help you lose weight and keep it off long term. Foods with less concentrated calories allow you to have  a larger portion sizes with fewer calories. This will allow you to lose unwanted weight and still feel satisfied. A new study shows that 4 in 10 obese people consider themselves to be a “healthy size”. The reason that can be dangerous is because being overweight has been linked to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and dementia. There are definte numbers to check to see if you are indeed a healthy size. You should know your Body Mass Index (BMI), waist to hip radio, blood pressure, aerobic fitness, resting heart rate, cholesterol levels and blood glucose levels.  To read more click here.

Almonds, avocado, olive oil- all healthy fats, right. But just how much of these healthy fats can you eat before you start gaining unwanted weight? The amount of fat that would cause you to gain weight (assuming you didn’t want to) is more of a question of total calories for the day. A healthy lifestyle is defined by four basic criteria: not smoking, holding weight down, eating right and of course exercising. However very few Americans participate in all four of these healthy criteria. Interval training is a term that you’re likely to hear thrown around by athletes of various types. This specific type of training provides a diverse array of different benefits to anyone who participates in cardiovasular activity, because it works both the aerobic and the anaerobic systems. Interval training consists of cardiovascular activity that alternates between periods of intense exercise and total recovery.
